Dalian University of Foreign Languages: A Pinnacle in English Studies and International Collaboration

The School of English Studies at Dalian University of Foreign Languages has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1970, previously known as the English Department. It underwent reorganization and was renamed the School of English Studies SES in 1996, reflecting its growth into an integral part of DUFL, one of China's leading institutions for foreign language education.
Over four decades, SES has cultivated a reputation for high-quality communication skills trning and is committed to developing students who excel not only linguistically but also possess strong interpersonal skills, a broad foundation in various disciplines, critical thinking abilities, ethical values, and global perspectives. Its English program is recognized nationally as both a distinguished specialty with unique characteristics and an exemplary discipline within Liaoning Province. This recognition has further bolstered the status of English Language and Literature as a key academic field in Liaoning and its position as a top department, based on evaluations conducted in 2012.
In addition to providing undergraduate programs focusing on English language, literature, translation studies, interpretation, and intercultural communication with an enrollment around 1500 students, the School offers master's degree programs specializing in English literature, theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies, cultural studies with about 300 postgraduate students. It is proud to be authorized by the Ministry of Education for recruitment in areas such as translation and interpretation since 2010.
The faculty at SES boasts a distinguished team comprising 12 professors, 25 associate professors, 17 lecturers along with numerous visiting scholars from around the world. Among this esteemed group are award recipients for excellence in teaching, education, research, and professional contributions such as the National Teaching Award, Model Teacher of Liaoning Province, and Excellent Researcher of Liaoning Province awards. The majority of faculty members hold international academic experiences that enrich their perspectives and teaching.
The School is recognized for its innovative educational programs med at fostering a holistic development among students. Students have consistently performed exceptionally well in national examinations like TEM-4, TEM-8, the CCTV Cup National English Speech Contest, the National English Debate Contest, Interpretation Contests across Twan Strts, Han Suyin National Translation Competition, and other competitions such as the 21st Century National English Speech and Writing Contests.
In terms of international collaborations, SES has established partnerships with tertiary institutions in various countries including UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan offering dual degree programs based onlike '2+2', '2+1+1', '3+2', '3+1+1', '3+2+1' at undergraduate level and '1+1+1', '1+2'at postgraduate levels. This provides a unique opportunity for students to gn international exposure through visiting scholar programs.
Graduates from SES are highly sought after by major organizations such as the Ministry of Foreign Affrs, Ministry of Commerce, national institutions, educational sectors, multinational corporations among others. Since its establishment in 1970, more than seven thousand students have completed their education here, contributing significantly to China's development and fostering mutual understanding on a global scale.
