Enhanced Communication for International Students Through English Proficiency and Cultural Integration

Global Affrs has implemented strategic initiatives med at ensuring academic success for international students across both undergraduate and graduate levels by analyzing data to identify challenges faced by multilingual learners. The program's overarching goal is to provide equitable access and resources that foster academic growth, while simultaneously empowering the majority of UC Davis' student population in their intercultural communication skills.

International and Academic English IAE offers several programs designed to support this mission:

  1. Pal Program: This year-round initiative facilitates peer-to-peer conversation partnerships between UC Davis students. These sessions are instrumental for enhancing cultural understanding, exploring language differences, and fostering inclusive friships among participants.

  2. Summer Start: An intensive 6-week summer program targeting incoming first-year international students during Summer Session II. It covers a curated selection of academic courses med at accelerating degree progress and acclimatization to UC Davis life.

  3. Language and Culture Coaching: Offered throughout the academic year, this program is tlored for multilingual graduate students seeking to refine their English communication skills for effective Teaching Assistant roles.

  4. Test of Oral English Proficiency TOEP: IAE also administers TOEP, an assessment conducted annually at the of summer and each academic quarter to evaluate prospective Teaching Assistants' language proficiency requirements.
