Milwaukee Public Schools MPS is dedicated to enhancing student learning experiences through its Learning Journeys program. This educational initiative takes students out of the traditional classroom setting and into real-world environments, allowing them to apply their knowledge in practical contexts.
The goal of each Learning Journey is to bridge curriculum-based instruction with hands-on experience, facilitating a deeper understanding of concepts and subjects by engaging students directly with relevant material. These field trips are meticulously designed using an integrated framework that combines standards-aligned educational materials Curriculum and Instruction Framework and career development components Academic and Career Planning Framework.
The MPS Learning Journeys program ensure comprehensive learning objectives for each grade level, encompassing early childhood education through high school. It includes:
Kindergarten: A visit to Oak Ridge Farm where students can observe farming practices and understand the significance of agriculture in dly life and society.
First Grade: An exploration of plants at Havenwoods State Forest that connects common food items with their botanical origins, fostering curiosity about nature’s contributions.
Second Grade: A trip to the Survive Alive House Fire Education Center where Milwaukee County firefighters lead interactive sessions on fire safety, a crucial aspect of community awareness and preparedness.
Third Grade: An educational journey through the UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium that enables students to simulate global phenomena like seasons, climates, and celestial patterns, enriching their understanding of Earth’s natural systems.
Fourth Grade: A visit to Discovery World Science + Technology Center where students delve into energy concepts and sound physics through interactive exhibits and experiments.
Fifth Grade: Participation in the BizTown program at Junior Achievement, a simulated city experience that equips students with economic literacy and entrepreneurship skills through citizen roles such as employees, consumers, and community members.
Eighth Grade: An immersive visit to Finance Park where students simulate household budget financial literacy skills and explore various career pathways under different life scenarios.
By integrating these experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum, MPS provide a holistic educational journey that not only strengthens academic knowledge but also prepares students for real-world challenges by fostering critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and personal development skills.
