Middleton International School: Promoting Multilingualism and Cultural Awareness

Read: 1091

At Middleton, we honor the cultural diversity that characterizes our vibrant school community. Our students come from various parts of the world and many bring with them a language other than English as their first language.

While our primary curriculum is delivered in English, we embrace multilingualism by offering a variety of languages for students to develop proficiency in either their mother tongue or an additional language. We also provide support for students whose first language isn't English through our English as an Additional Language EAL program.

Additional Languages Offered

We believe that being bilingual, culturally aware, and internationally-minded best prepares our students for the globalized world of today. Drawing on the extensive experience of EtonHouse, we at Middleton recognize that language learning should be natural and fun through meaningful experiences in an inquiry-based curriculum. Our goal is to ensure that learners build vocabulary naturally through conversations and task completion while also appreciating cultural elements like crafts and celebrations.

Students benefit from a bilingual learning environment that includes Mandarin through our inquire.think.learn curriculum, which is included in the school fees.

English as an Additional Language EAL Intensive EAL IEAL

At Middleton, we support non-native speakers with their English language acquisition to enable better access to our academic programs. Our EAL and IEAL programs assess and provide individualized support based on student needs. These programs are chargeable at $2,725 or $4,905 per year inclusive of 9 GST, deping on the level of support required.

Students enrolled in these programs receive up to four sessions lasting 30 minutes each for early learners and four sessions lasting 45 minutes each for primary and secondary students. The IEAL program offers an enhanced duration with double the intensity of standard EAL sessions, providing more focused language proficiency development.

We continuously track student progress through regular observations, formative and summative assessments to ensure they meet the required English standards by their grade level. Once this is achieved, learners graduate from our programs and can then choose another additional language to study.

Supporting Language and Cultural Development

By integrating cultural elements into learning and providing support for non-native speakers, we m to create a holistic environment that promotes not only language skills but also an appreciation of diverse cultures. This helps prepare students to engage effectively in global contexts by fostering a lifelong passion for continuous learning and understanding.
