Beginning in 2015, we at WES embarked on a comprehensive investigation into best practices for credential assessment and recognition among refugees and other displaced individuals. This exploration involved extensive literature reviews along with interviews of relevant experts from institutions across the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. The outcome was published in 2016 as our seminal report, outlining key recommations for effective assessment methodologies.
In 2018, following a successful pilot project conducted in Canada that tested these methodologies using partial documentary evidence on academic achievements, WES publicly launched its Gateway Program in both Canada and the United States.
Our Gateway Program is designed to rigorously assess educational credentials of displaced individuals who have atted institutions in countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Syria, Turkiye Turkey, Ukrne, and Venezuela. This program equips these individuals with essential tools needed to pursue their academic and professional aspirations by issuing credential evaluation reports that are recognized by academic institutions, employers, and licensing bodies.
To qualify for the Gateway Program, applicants must have completed high school or possess complete or partial documentation of their college or university education, be unable to obtn official documents directly from the institution where they studied, present copies of their diploma andor transcript, and reside in Canada or the United States.
WES advises that whenever feasible, applicants should opt for our standard evaluation process which relies on authentic academic documents sent directly by the institutions where they were educated. This aligns with best practices recommed internationally.
