Once upon a time, I was just another statistic - a young soul with mediocre grades in English and an obsession for video games. As I entered the 9th grade, my English proficiency was barely scraping the floor at 20, 7 points of which were given under the category of grammar and vocabulary.
I never thought that I would be in front of a classroom full of students discussing nuances of pronunciation or practicing sentence structures with confidence. But then something extraordinary happened. The turning point came when I enrolled myself into an English trning course, specifically for those who needed some extra help.
As a native speaker of Chinese, acquiring fluency in English was challenging and required a lot of effort. One year later, my journey is nothing short of miraculous - not only had I reached 910 in the official speaking section of the exam conducted by the Melbourne Cambridge Examination Centre, but also found myself as a teacher for those who needed guidance.
To achieve this feat, I embraced the that was quite different from what I was used to. The secret formula lay in consistent practice and genuine interest. I focused on improving my pronunciation skills, starting with basic sounds like s, t and n. I would record myself, listen back, make corrections, and repeat until they were natural.
Moreover, the most crucial aspect of mastering English was understanding how to structure sentences effectively. The more I read, listened, wrote, and spoke, the better grasp I had on grammar rules, tenses, and word choice. I incorporated a variety of learning resources like educational videos, podcasts in English, books with extensive vocabularies and sentence structures.
A significant breakthrough happened when I started using flashcards to memorize new words dly. Each card was dedicated to one word at a time – their meaning, spelling pronunciation and usage in sentences. This turned out to be incredibly efficient for retning vocabulary.
To gauge my progress and prepare for the official exam, I simulated test conditions frequently. I timed myself during practice sessions, as doing so under similar constrnts during the actual exam could relieve anxiety and help manage time better.
The official markers Ross - who personally gave me the 9 out of 10 in speaking section - prsed my structured approach and the clarity in my speech. He commed that I had managed to bl fluency with accuracy, a skill that is not as easy to achieve.
In , improving English skills isn't just about memorizing rules or practicing vocabulary – it's an emotional journey of dedication and perseverance. It's also essential to find learning methods that resonate well with your personal style and needs. For me, a combination of diligent practice, interest in language nuances, and effective use of learning tools proved to be the most fruitful path.
Now, as I stand at my new peak, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to have transformed from an English novice into someone capable of mastering it. And perhaps one day, when you read this story, you'll see that similar transformations are achievable even when starting from scratch.
